Prof. Becker began his career with primary training as an internist, specializing in gastrointestinal diseases. This was followed by a second career as a pulmonologist. As his main interest was always in endoscopy, he became directly involved in the development and evaluation of several new diagnostic and interventional technologies, including among others: autofluorescence, endobronchial ultrasound, the VRI, electromagnetic navigation and development of the Ultraflex*R* Nitinol stent for the airways. His publications include original articles on theses technologies and textbook chapters. He is a member of many international societies and serves on the editorial boards of several peer-reviewed journals. He holds academic positions at Harvard University, the University of Nevada and at St. Marianna University School of Medicine in Kawasaki, Japan.

Prof. Miyazawa received his medical degree from Kagoshima University School of Medicine in 1975, trained in Internal Medicine at Hiroshima University School of Medicine, and became the Director of the Department of Pulmonary Medicine at Hiroshima City Hospital in 1991. He has served as the Chairman of Division of Respiratory and Infectious Diseases at St. Marianna University School of Medicine since 2005. He has published over 50 publications and is the recipient of several conference prizes. He is a member of the Board of Regents of the World Association for Bronchology; the Editorial Board of the Journal of Bronchology; the Board of Regents of the Journal of the Japan Society for Bronchology; Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and International Governor of the American College of Chest Physicians.

Prof. Detterbeck is the Surgical Director for Thoracic Oncology and Associate Director of Clinical Affairs for the Yale Cancer Center. He is a board-certified thoracic surgeon with clinical experience in many aspects of thoracic oncology, including mesothelioma, lung cancer, esophageal cancer, and thymoma, as well as with mediastinal tumors, chest wall tumors and Pancoast tumors. He has published over 150 scientific publications in cancer biology; cancer imaging techniques; prognostic markers of cancers; multimodality (multiple therapies for) treatment of cancer; evidence-based medicine. Prof. Detterbeck was the former chairman of the ACCP’s Thoracic Oncology NetWork; currently he is active on the steering committee. He also serves on the steering committee for the ACCP Guidelines in Lung Cancer. In 2005 Prof. Detterbeck was listed in the “Who’s Who in America” (America’s Top Doctors for Cancer guide), and in 2003 was listed in guide to America’s Top Physicians Consumers’ Research Council of America.

Prof. Pollack has long been active in teaching and clinical research and is an international leader in emergency medicine. His primary research interests are in the management of cardiopulmonary emergencies, especially acute thrombosis, acute decompensated heart failure, and acute severe hypertension. He has written more than 300 original journals and is on the steering committees of multiple emergency medicine and cardiology trials. Prof. Pollack also lectures widely on many varied topics in emergency medicine. He is the only physician to have received the American College of Emergency Physicians’ highest national awards in both teaching and research, and also received the national teaching award from the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors. Prof. Pollack was Research Director from 1994-2000 in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ, and he chaired that department from 1997-2001.
